Target Information
FOXL2 is a winged helix/forkhead transcription factor that is highly conserved in human, goat, mouse, and certain aquatic species. Given its cross-species conservation, it appears to play a critical evolutionary role, likely in ovarian differentiation in mammals and in ovarian somatic cell differentiation and follicle development or maintenance.
Immunohistochemical data show that FOXL2 is a nuclear protein specifically expressed in eyelids and in fetal and adult ovarian follicular cells, without major posttranslational modifications.
FOXL2 is associated with blepharophimosis/ptosis/epicanthus inversus syndrome (BPES). Type I BPES includes eyelid abnormalities with ovarian failure, while Type II BPES involves only eyelid defects. Studies indicate FOXL2 expression in developing mouse eyelid mesenchyme and adult ovarian follicles.
