Target Information
The zinc transporter ZIP4 (SLC39A4) belongs to a family of divalent ion transporters. Zinc is an essential ion for cellular growth, development, and differentiation. ZIP4 was first identified as a zinc uptake transporter in the intestine and is a candidate gene for acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE), a rare inherited defect in dietary zinc absorption.
Aberrant ZIP4 expression has been associated with cancer progression, particularly in pancreatic and hepatocellular carcinomas, where it can repress apoptosis, enhance cell cycle progression, and promote migration. These findings suggest ZIP4 plays a role in multiple cancer types.
