Target Information
Cytokeratin 19 is part of a subfamily of intermediate filament proteins and is characterized by biochemical diversity, represented in human epithelial tissues by at least 20 different polypeptides. Cytokeratins range in molecular weight from 40–68 kDa and isoelectric pH between 4.9–7.8. Each human cytokeratin is numbered 1 to 20. Expression patterns vary by epithelial type and degree of differentiation. These patterns are valuable in distinguishing epithelial malignancies. Cytokeratin antibodies assist in tumor differential diagnosis via immunohistochemistry and are useful in cytopathology and flow cytometry. Cytokeratin 19 is not expressed in hepatocytes, making it useful for identifying liver metastasis.
