Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These receptor proteins belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and mediate G protein-coupled signal transduction of odorant molecules. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. The OR12D2 gene is a segregating pseudogene, meaning that some individuals possess a functional allele while others have a non-functional variant.
