Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and contribute to protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of small (28S) and large (39S) subunits, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition—reversed compared to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, affecting sequence recognition and biochemical properties. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described.
