Target Information
SLC1A6 encodes a glutamate transporter, also known as excitatory amino acid transporter (EAAT4), belonging to the solute carrier family 6 (SLC1). EAATs are sodium- and potassium-dependent transporters widely distributed throughout the brain. SLC1A6 mediates uptake of L-glutamate, L-aspartate, and D-aspartate as a symporter, transporting amino acids together with Na⁺ and H⁺ ions, and counter-transporting K⁺ ions. It also mediates uncoupled Cl⁻ flux to prevent charge accumulation. SLC1A6 plays a crucial role in clearing glutamate from the synaptic cleft, terminating postsynaptic signaling. Diseases associated with SLC1A6 include Dicarboxylic Aminoaciduria.
