Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a membrane protein similar to MHC class I-type proteins and associates with beta2-microglobulin. It is thought to regulate iron absorption by modulating the interaction between the transferrin receptor and transferrin. Mutations in this gene cause hereditary haemochromatosis, a recessive genetic disorder of iron overload. Multiple alternatively spliced variants have been described.
