Target Information

ATRX encodes a protein that contains an ATPase/helicase domain and belongs to the SWI/SNF family of chromatin remodeling proteins. Mutations of this gene are associated with an X-linked mental retardation (XLMR) syndrome often accompanied by alpha-thalassemia (ATRX) syndrome. These mutations can cause changes in DNA methylation patterns, linking chromatin remodeling, DNA methylation, and gene expression in development. The protein undergoes cell cycle-dependent phosphorylation, regulating nuclear matrix and chromatin association, and is involved in gene regulation and chromosomal segregation during mitosis. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been reported.
