FNIP1은 종양 억제 단백질인 folliculin 및 AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)와 결합하는 단백질을 암호화합니다. 이 단백질은 AMPK 및 rapamycin 표적 신호 경로를 조절함으로써 세포 대사 및 영양 감지 조절에 관여합니다.
이 유전자는 유사한 결합 활성을 가진 밀접한 상동 유전자를 가지고 있으며, 두 단백질 모두 heat shock protein-90 (Hsp90)과 결합하여 그 ATPase 활성을 음성 조절하고 folliculin과의 결합을 촉진합니다.
FNIP1 관련 질환으로는 Birt-Hogg-Dube Syndrome 및 Pleural Disease가 보고되어 있습니다.
