Target Information
GFAP (Glial fibrillary acidic protein) is a class III intermediate filament protein specifically expressed in astrocytes and certain astroglia of the central nervous system. It is also found in satellite cells of peripheral ganglia and non-myelinating Schwann cells. Neural stem cells strongly express GFAP, making it a key astrocytic marker.
GFAP expression is elevated in various brain tumors derived from astrocytic cells and can also be found in lens epithelium, Kupffer cells, salivary tumors, and erythrocytes.
GFAP is used to distinguish astrocytes from other glial cells during development. Mutations in the GFAP gene cause Alexander disease, a rare astrocytic disorder.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.
