NLN 유전자는 metallopeptidase M3 단백질 패밀리에 속하며, neurotensin의 Pro10-Tyr11 결합을 절단하여 neurotensin(1-10)과 neurotensin(11-13)을 형성합니다. 이 단백질은 중추신경계 및 위장관에서 neurotensin 신호의 종결에 관여하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
