Target Information
Mammalian ribosomal proteins are encoded by multigene families that include processed pseudogenes and one functional intron-containing gene. Ribosomal Protein S20 (RPS20) is a 119-amino-acid cytoplasmic protein that forms part of the 40S ribosomal subunit. It co-transcribes with the small nucleolar RNA gene U54 and acts as a primary binding protein interacting with both the 5′ and 3′ minor domains of 16S rRNA. These interactions are essential for nucleating assembly of the 30S ribosomal subunit. The RPS20 gene exists as multiple processed pseudogenes dispersed throughout the genome.
