Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the degenerin/epithelial sodium channel (DEG/ENaC) superfamily. Members of this family are amiloride-sensitive sodium channels with intracellular N and C termini, two hydrophobic transmembrane regions, and a large extracellular loop rich in conserved cysteine residues.
ASIC1 is expressed in most brain neurons and acts as a cation channel gated by extracellular protons, inhibited by amiloride, and permeable to Na⁺, Ca²⁺, Li⁺, and K⁺.
Expression is observed in dorsal root ganglia, sciatic nerves, olfactory bulb, cortical regions, hippocampus, amygdala, cerebellar cells, and various basal ganglia regions.
Isoform 3 is expressed only in dorsal root ganglion, while isoform 1 is found in DRG, spinal cord, trigeminal ganglia, and mesencephalic nucleus.
