Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and participate in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA ratio—opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising mitoribosomes vary significantly among species, making sequence-based recognition difficult. The MRPL22 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein belonging to the L22 ribosomal protein family. A pseudogene is located on chromosome 4q, and two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
