Target Information
CCL5 (RANTES) is a chemokine gene located on chromosome 17q. Chemokines are secreted proteins involved in immunoregulatory and inflammatory processes.
CCL5, part of the CC subfamily, acts as a chemoattractant for blood monocytes, memory T helper cells, and eosinophils, triggering histamine release and eosinophil activation.
It is a major HIV-suppressive factor produced by CD8+ cells and functions as a natural ligand for CCR5, suppressing replication of R5 strains of HIV-1.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
Diseases associated with CCL5 include Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 and Periapical Granuloma.
