Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the S100 family, which contains two EF-hand calcium-binding motifs. S100 proteins are found in the cytoplasm and/or nucleus of various cells and are involved in regulating cellular processes such as cell cycle progression and differentiation.
S100 genes are clustered on chromosome 1q21, but this specific gene is located at 4p16. In addition to Ca²⁺, this protein binds Zn²⁺ and Mg²⁺ and may play a role in the etiology of prostate cancer.
