Target Information

CEA (Carcino Embryonic Antigen, CD66e) is synthesized during development in the fetal gut and re-expressed in increased amounts in intestinal carcinomas and other tumors. It belongs to the immunoglobulin supergene family and consists of one N domain and six immunoglobulin constant-like domains. Antibodies to CEA are useful for identifying the origin of metastatic adenocarcinomas and distinguishing pulmonary adenocarcinomas from pleural mesotheliomas.
CEA functions as a cell adhesion molecule found on leukocytes, epithelia, and endothelia, mediating homophilic and heterophilic interactions. It plays roles in tissue differentiation, angiogenesis, apoptosis, tumor suppression, metastasis, and immune response modulation. Multiple transcript variants exist, though not all are fully defined.
