Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the family of pyridine nucleotide oxidoreductases. The protein reduces thioredoxins and other substrates, playing a key role in selenium metabolism and protection against oxidative stress.
The functional enzyme is a homodimer that uses FAD as a cofactor. Each subunit contains a selenocysteine (Sec) residue essential for catalytic activity.
Selenocysteine is encoded by the UGA codon, typically a stop signal, but recognized as Sec through a SECIS element in the 3′ UTR.
Alternative splicing yields multiple transcript variants encoding identical or distinct isoforms.
