Target Information
The type I interferons, IFN-alpha and IFN-beta, are a group of structurally and functionally related proteins induced by viruses or double-stranded RNA. They confer an antiviral state in cells and compete for binding to a common cell surface receptor. Immune IFN (IFN-gamma) binds to a distinct receptor, IFN-alphaR, which is weakly responsive to type I interferons. In contrast, IFN-alpha/betaR binds and responds effectively to IFN-beta and several IFN-alpha subtypes. IFN-alpha/betaR is expressed as two alternatively spliced transcripts, IFN-alpha/betaR1 and IFN-alpha/betaR2, both involved in signal transduction and ligand binding.
