ST8SIA4 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 α-2,8 결합된 시알산의 중합을 촉매하여 polysialic acid를 합성합니다. 이는 neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM1)의 접착 특성을 조절하는 역할을 합니다. 이 단백질은 glycosyltransferase family 29에 속하며, Golgi apparatus에 존재할 수 있는 type II 막단백질입니다. 서로 다른 두 가지 isoform을 암호화하는 transcript variant가 보고되었습니다.
