Target Information
Selenium is an essential trace element that provides tolerance to toxicity from heavy metals and reactive xenobiotics. It has potent anticarcinogenic properties, and selenium deficiency may lead to certain neurological diseases. These effects are attributed to selenium-binding proteins.
Selenium binding protein 1 (SELENBP1) is down-regulated in lung adenocarcinoma, colorectal cancer, and ovarian cancer. It is upregulated approximately two-fold in the brains of patients with schizophrenia, serving as a potential biomarker for this disease.
