Target Information
The Map kinase-interacting kinases (MKNK1 and MKNK2) are activated by Map kinases and regulate protein synthesis by phosphorylating eIF4E on Ser209. MKNK2 may contribute to tumorigenesis and play a role in the response to environmental stress and cytokines. Overexpression of Mnk2 increases phosphorylation of endogenous eIF-4E, demonstrating its function as an eIF-4E kinase in vivo. Human Mnk2 shows ~94% identity with murine Mnk2 and 71% with human Mnk1. In vitro phosphorylation studies indicate Mnk2 is a better substrate than Mnk1 for Erk2, p38MAPKα, and p38MAPKβ.
