Target Information
The protein encoded by the NDUFS2 gene is a core subunit of the mitochondrial membrane respiratory chain NADH dehydrogenase (Complex I). Mammalian mitochondrial complex I consists of at least 43 subunits, seven encoded by mitochondrial DNA and the remainder by nuclear genes. The iron-sulfur protein fraction of complex I includes seven subunits, among them the NDUFS2 gene product. Complex I catalyzes NADH oxidation coupled with ubiquinone reduction and proton translocation across the mitochondrial membrane. Mutations in this gene are associated with mitochondrial complex I deficiency. Alternative splicing results in multiple isoforms.
