Target Information
OPA1 is a dynamin-related GTPase critical for maintaining mitochondrial morphology and mtDNA. Mutations in OPA1 are commonly associated with heterozygous optic atrophy, a dominant trait leading to reduced visual clarity or blindness, typically beginning in childhood and progressing with age. The phenotype is attributed to optic nerve fiber degeneration. OPA1 dysfunction is also linked to mitochondrial abnormalities implicated in schizophrenia, affecting apoptosis and cellular metabolic regulation.
