Target Information
Adenylate kinase is an enzyme that regulates the adenine nucleotide composition within cells by catalyzing the reversible transfer of phosphate groups among adenine nucleotides. Three isozymes (AK1, AK2, AK3) have been identified in vertebrates.
- AK1: Found in cytosol of skeletal muscle, brain, and erythrocytes.
- AK2, AK3: Found in mitochondria of other tissues such as liver and heart.
AK1 mutations are associated with nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia due to reduced catalytic activity.
