Target Information

The S100A8/A9 heterocomplex, also known as the MRP-8/MRP-14 complex or calprotectin, constitutes about 60% of the cytoplasmic protein fraction of circulating polymorphonuclear granulocytes and is also found in monocytes, macrophages, and ileal tissue eosinophils.
Peripheral blood monocytes carry the antigen extra- and intracellularly, whereas neutrophils carry it only intracellularly.

The S100A8/A9 complex exhibits antibacterial, antifungal, immunomodulating, and antiproliferative properties. It also acts as a potent chemotactic factor for neutrophils. Elevated plasma concentrations are associated with diseases involving increased neutrophil activity, such as inflammatory bowel disease.
Calprotectin is detectable in feces due to granulocyte transmigration through the intestinal wall. Increased calprotectin levels have been observed in plasma, saliva, gingival crevicular fluid, stools, and synovial fluid during infection and inflammatory conditions.
