Target Information

Non-collagenous proteins of the small leucine-rich repeat (SLR) protein family are important components of the extracellular matrix. The extracellular matrix regulates key biological processes such as development, tissue repair, and metastasis through control of cell proliferation, differentiation, adhesion, and migration.

Podocan (also known as PCAN, SLRR5A, or PODN) is a 613-amino-acid secreted glycoprotein belonging to the small leucine-rich proteoglycan (SLRP) family, class V subfamily. It is expressed in kidney, heart, liver, pancreas, and vascular smooth muscle cells. Podocan exists in three alternatively spliced isoforms and contains twenty LRR (leucine-rich repeats), an N-terminal cysteine-rich cluster, and an acidic C-terminal domain. It may be involved in growth regulation in cardiovascular tissues and interacts with type I collagen (COL1). The PODN gene is located on human chromosome 1.
