Target Information

Kinesins are a large family of microtubule-dependent motor proteins responsible for the distribution of organelles, vesicles, and macromolecular complexes throughout the cell. Individual kinesin members play crucial roles in cell division, intracellular transport, and membrane trafficking events such as endocytosis and transcytosis.
KIF1B, a member of the KIF1/Unc104 family, is involved in the transport of mitochondria or synaptic vesicles in axons. It is an amino-terminal-type motor protein expressed ubiquitously, with the highest levels in differentiated nerve cells. The human KIF1B gene maps to chromosome 1p36.2. Mutations in KIF1B can cause defects in axonal transport, contributing to human peripheral neuropathy. The mouse KIF1B gene produces two isoforms through alternative splicing.
