Target Information
The importin-alpha/beta complex and the GTPase Ran mediate nuclear import of proteins with a classical nuclear localization signal. The RanBP7 protein is one of approximately 20 potential Ran targets sharing a motif related to the Ran-binding site of importin-beta. It prevents activation of Ran’s GTPase by RanGAP1, inhibits nucleotide exchange on RanGTP, and binds directly to nuclear pore complexes, competing for binding sites with importin-beta and transportin. RanBP7 participates in a Ran-dependent transport cycle, rapidly crossing the nuclear envelope in both directions. It functions as one of several importin beta-like transport receptors that directly bind and import ribosomal proteins.
