Target Information
Tryptase gamma (TPSG1), also known as serine protease 31 or transmembrane tryptase, is an enzyme encoded by the TPSG1 gene in humans. Tryptases are trypsin-like serine proteases belonging to the peptidase family S1. They are enzymatically active only as heparin-stabilized tetramers and resistant to endogenous proteinase inhibitors.
Several tryptase genes are clustered on chromosome 16p13.3, with four functional genes identified: alpha I, beta I, beta II, and gamma I. Beta tryptases are mainly expressed in mast cells, whereas alpha-tryptases predominate in basophils. The TPSG1 gene differs from other family members by possessing a C-terminal hydrophobic domain that may serve as a membrane anchor. Tryptases are implicated as mediators in asthma and other allergic and inflammatory disorders.
