Target Information
The protein encoded by the BCL-X (BCL2L1) gene belongs to the BCL-2 protein family. Members of this family form hetero- or homodimers and act as anti- or pro-apoptotic regulators involved in diverse cellular processes. These proteins are located at the outer mitochondrial membrane and regulate the voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC), influencing mitochondrial membrane potential and the release of cytochrome C, both key factors in apoptosis induction.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding two isoforms: the longer isoform acts as an apoptotic inhibitor, while the shorter isoform functions as an apoptotic activator.
