Target Information
SPHK1 (Sphingosine Kinase 1), along with SPHK2, catalyzes the phosphorylation of sphingosine to produce sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), a key signaling molecule.
S1P acts through G-protein coupled receptors to regulate diverse cellular processes including differentiation, calcium mobilization, and apoptosis.
Inhibitors of SPHKs are being studied as potential cancer therapeutics.
S1P functions both intracellularly and extracellularly, mediating signaling through EDG family S1P receptors.
