Target Information
The protein encoded by the NDUFS1 gene belongs to the complex I 75 kDa subunit family. Mammalian complex I consists of 45 different subunits and is located in the mitochondrial inner membrane. This protein exhibits NADH dehydrogenase and oxidoreductase activity, transferring electrons from NADH to the respiratory chain. The immediate electron acceptor is believed to be ubiquinone. NDUFS1 is the largest subunit of complex I and part of the iron-sulfur fragment, possibly forming part of the active site where NADH is oxidized. Mutations in this gene are associated with complex I deficiency. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
