Target Information
Alpha-lactalbumin is a principal protein of milk and functions as the regulatory subunit of the lactose synthase (LS) heterodimer. Together with beta 1,4-galactosyltransferase (beta4Gal-T1), it enables LS to produce lactose by transferring galactose moieties to glucose. As a monomer, alpha-lactalbumin strongly binds calcium and zinc ions and may exhibit bactericidal or antitumor activity. A folding variant known as HAMLET is thought to induce apoptosis in tumor and immature cells.
