APAF1 유전자는 세포질 단백질을 암호화하며, 이는 세포사멸(apoptosis)을 유도하는 핵심 역할을 합니다. APAF1 단백질은 WD-40 도메인, CARD(caspase recruitment domain), NB-ARC(ATPase domain)를 포함합니다. Cytochrome c 및 dATP 결합 시 올리고머 형태의 apoptosome을 형성하며, 이는 caspase 9을 활성화시켜 세포사멸 경로를 진행시킵니다. 대체 스플라이싱에 의해 여러 이형 단백질이 생성될 수 있습니다.
