Target Information
In response to environmental stress, cells increase expression of heat shock or stress proteins. HSPB1 (heat shock protein beta-1 or HSP27) is a small heat shock protein acting as a molecular chaperone that maintains denatured proteins in a folding-competent state. It contributes to stress resistance and actin organization, and regulates processes such as phosphorylation and axonal transport of neurofilament proteins. Mutations in the HSPB1 gene are associated with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease 2F and distal hereditary motor neuronopathy type 2B.
