Target Information
BCL-2 is a key regulator of apoptosis, functioning to inhibit or promote cell death. Members of the BCL-2 family can form dimers that modulate apoptosis. Bag1 forms a heterodimer with BCL-2 to enhance its anti-apoptotic effect. Bax and Bak are involved in cytochrome c release from mitochondria, initiating apoptosis. Constitutive expression of BCL-2, such as translocation to the Ig heavy chain locus, is associated with follicular lymphoma. Neoplastic germinal centers express high levels of BCL-2 alpha protein, unlike normal centers. Two transcript variants of BCL-2 differ at their C-terminal ends. Overexpression of BCL-2 has been linked to human cancers including B-cell lymphoma and prostate cancer.
