Target Information
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, consisting of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits include four RNA species and about 80 distinct proteins. This gene encodes a ribosomal protein that is part of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S17P family. Located in the cytoplasm, the E. coli ortholog (ribosomal protein S17) may be involved in the recognition of termination codons. The gene is co-transcribed with a small nucleolar RNA gene located in its third intron. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
