Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses that trigger the perception of smell. These receptors are members of the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family, arising from single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for odorant recognition and signal transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. The nomenclature assigned to these genes and proteins is organism-specific.
