Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Prokaryotic ribosomes also contain a 5S rRNA, which is absent in mammalian mitoribosomes.

Among species, the proteins of the mitoribosome differ significantly in sequence and biochemical properties, complicating recognition by sequence homology. The MRPS15 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein belonging to the ribosomal protein S15P family. This protein is more than twice the size of its E. coli counterpart, with conserved 12S rRNA binding sites. Between human and mouse, MRPS15 is the least conserved among small subunit ribosomal proteins. Pseudogenes corresponding to MRPS15 are found on chromosomes 15q and 19q.
