Target Information

The CDKN2A gene produces multiple transcript variants differing in their first exons.
At least three alternatively spliced variants encode distinct proteins, two of which act as CDK4 kinase inhibitors.
Another transcript includes an alternate exon located 20 Kb upstream, encoding an ARF protein that stabilizes tumor suppressor p53 by interacting with MDM2.
Despite structural differences, both CDK inhibitor isoforms and ARF share roles in cell cycle G1 control.
Mutations or deletions of this gene are common in various tumors, making it a key tumor suppressor gene.
