SNAREs (soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor-attachment protein receptors) are essential for cellular membrane fusion. SNAREs on opposing membranes form a trans-SNARE complex, a parallel four alpha-helical bundle that drives membrane fusion.
STX17 is a SNARE of the autophagosome involved in autophagy by controlling autophagosome-lysosome membrane fusion. It may also play a role in maintaining the architecture and transport regulation between the endoplasmic reticulum, ERGIC, and Golgi apparatus. (Uniprot)
