Target Information
Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is essential for development, tissue turnover, and tumor formation. PDCD4 (Programmed Cell Death Protein 4) is upregulated during apoptosis and encodes a tumor suppressor protein lost in various carcinomas (breast, colon, lung, prostate). PDCD4 inhibits the helicase activity of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4A and suppresses AP-1 mediated transactivation. Akt kinase regulates PDCD4 through phosphorylation, reducing its inhibitory effect on AP-1-responsive promoters. Two isoforms of PDCD4 are known.
