Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, having approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, which contrasts with prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins that compose mitoribosomes vary greatly among species in sequence and biochemical properties, making sequence homology recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and a pseudogene corresponding to this gene is located on chromosome 2p. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
