Background
This gene encodes a protein that is necessary for the repair of ultraviolet light-damaged DNA. It is the smaller subunit of a heterodimeric complex involved in nucleotide excision repair and mediates ubiquitylation of histones H3 and H4, facilitating the cellular response to DNA damage. Mutations in this gene cause xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group E, characterized by UV sensitivity and predisposition to skin cancer, sometimes accompanied by neurological abnormalities. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
