Cellular Localization	Cytoplasm; Cytoskeleton (spindle); Nucleus. The nuclear-cytoplasmic distribution could be regulated by calmodulin availability. Localizes to spindle poles during mitosis and associates with microtubule minus ends.
Background	This gene is the human ortholog of the Drosophila abnormal spindle gene (asp), essential for normal mitotic spindle function in embryonic neuroblasts. In mice, it plays a role in mitotic spindle regulation, particularly in neurogenesis. Mutations are associated with microcephaly primary type 5. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
