Background
- Function: Histone demethylase that specifically demethylates Lys-9 of histone H3, playing a central role in the histone code. Does not demethylate H3 Lys-4, Lys-27, Lys-36, or H4 Lys-20.
- Activity: Demethylates di- and trimethylated H3 Lys-9 residues, generating formaldehyde and succinate.
- Cofactor: Binds one Fe(2+) ion per subunit.
- Similarity: Belongs to the JHDM3 histone demethylase family; contains one JmjC domain and one JmjN domain.
- Caution: It is uncertain whether Met-1 or Met-4 is the initiator.
