Target Information

EXOSC5 is a non-catalytic component of the RNA exosome complex, which exhibits 3’→5’ exoribonuclease activity and participates in numerous RNA processing and degradation events.
In the nucleus, the RNA exosome complex is involved in maturation of stable RNA species (rRNA, snRNA, snoRNA), removal of RNA by-products and non-coding transcripts, and degradation of defective mRNAs.
It may also play roles in Ig class switch recombination (CSR) and somatic hypermutation (SHM).
In the cytoplasm, it contributes to mRNA turnover and RNA surveillance, degrading unstable mRNAs with AU-rich elements and histone mRNAs.
The catalytic inactive RNA exosome core complex (Exo-9) serves as a scaffold for RNA binding and presentation for ribonucleolysis, and interaction with catalytic subunits and accessory proteins.
