Aldh3A1은 aldehyde dehydrogenase 초패밀리에 속하는 NAD(P)(+)-의존성 효소로, 다양한 지방족 및 방향족 알데하이드를 산화시킵니다. 이 단백질은 위와 각막에서 높게 발현되며, 특히 각막의 수용성 단백질 중 5–50%를 차지합니다. Aldh3A1은 반응성 알데하이드의 해독 및 UV 에너지 흡수를 통해 UV 유도 산화 스트레스로부터 각막을 보호하는 역할을 하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. Aldh3A1 결핍 마우스는 야생형과 구분되지 않지만, Aldh3A1 및 Aldh1A1이 모두 결핍된 마우스는 UVB 노출 후 백내장 형성이 증가하였으며, 이는 Aldh1A1이 Aldh3A1의 기능을 부분적으로 보완할 수 있음을 시사합니다.
