Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They have approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, which is the reverse of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins that make up the mitoribosome vary greatly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and a pseudogene corresponding to this gene is located on chromosome 5q.
